Iron Infusion

Overview

Intravenous iron treats iron deficiency, and it treats it properly: it replaces stores in weeks rather than the months oral iron takes, and it works in people whose gut will not absorb tablets or who cannot tolerate them. It is a medical infusion rather than a wellness drip, and it is the one thing on this list we will not give you on the strength of how you feel. Iron studies come first. If your ferritin and transferrin saturation are normal, tiredness is not iron and an infusion will not fix it.

Suitable for

For people with iron deficiency confirmed on bloods, particularly where oral iron has failed or cannot be used. Not for tiredness with normal iron studies.

Questions

Because iron is the one deficiency where guessing has consequences in both directions. Untreated, it is worth correcting properly. Over-treated, iron accumulates and there is no easy way to remove it. Ferritin under 30 ng/mL, or under 100 where inflammation is raising the number, plus a transferrin saturation under 20%, is what makes this the right treatment. Normal studies mean the tiredness is something else.
